Winter/ El invierno
We continued our study on winter. We learned that snowflakes have many shapes, but the initial shape is a hexagon, and snowflakes change many times when traveling from the sky to the ground. All snowflakes are different. At science center, the children experimented with ice, colored water and salt. We learned that salt makes it harder for the water molecules to bond together in their rigid structure. In water, salt is a solute, and it will break into its elements. That is the reason N.C Department of Transportation uses a mix of salt and sand to treat the road when it snows or ice. The children made prediction how long it will take to melt our snowman. It was fun to see it melt. The children observed snowflakes and found the matches and the children used marshmallows and toothpicks to make snowflakes and the children explored marshmallows by classifying them by size, how many marshmallows fit on a toothpick, taste and sink or float!
