Insects! Insectos!

This week we learned about insects. We learned that insects have 2 antennas and 6 legs. The children use pattern blocks to make patterns of their favorite insects. The children pretended to search insects and classify them. The children classify insects by colors and counted them 1:1 correspondence. Also, we are practicing to read graphs and identifying more and less. The children use geometric shapes to make their favorite insects and they painted with a fly swatter. It was fun! Esta semana aprendimos acerca los insectos. Aprendimos que los insectos tiene 2 antenas y 6 patas. Los niños usaron figuras geométricas para hacer patrones de sus insectos favoritos. Los niños pretendieron buscar insectos y clasificarlos. Los niños clasificaron insectos por color y los contaron 1:1 correspondencia. También, practicaron leer grafico e identificar los que tiene mas o poco. Los niños usaron figuras geométricas para hacer su insecto favorito y pintaron con mata moscas. Fue divertido!  ...

Flowers! Flores!

This week we continue learning about flowers. We painted with flowers. It was fun to see the different patterns and they use different shapes to create their representation of flowers. At the science center, we explored flowers. We counted petals; we observed the stem under microscope and learn how some insects use pollen and nectar from flowers. The children use drawings to represent what they saw. Our bean sprout and the children learned about the roots and how important they are to make the plant strong. We replanted our black bean to a cup. The children will keep watering them and record changes.  Esta semana continuamos aprendiendo acerca de las flores. Pintamos con flores. This week we begin our study on flowers.  We learned about different painters such as Monet and Van Gogh. The children use markers and crayons to create their own representation of flowers. Also, the children use geometric shapes to make flowers. At block center, the children added flowers to their structures and designed beautiful gardens. At the science center, the children explore different seeds. The children used magnifying glasses and microscopes to observe the shapes and colors of different seeds. We planted black beans. We will observe in the next week. The children drew pictures of their findings. The past week, we observed how caterpillar grow and get inside a cocoon. Ice Cream! Helados!

This week we celebrated what we learned about ice cream and bakery. We continue experimenting with ice. The children painted with frozen paint. It was fun to see how they mixed the paint and created new colors. We also experiment with gummy bear and with added to different liquid. We notice the gummy bears are dissolving in vinegar and they expanded in a mix of water, salt, baking soda and sugar. The children had the opportunity to use magnifying glasses to explore the changes. On Friday, we had a great visitor from North Carolina State University-Dairy Education Coordinator. Mr. Alex explains to the children the process of milking a cow and showed us the different types of food for a cow and explained about other products made out of milk. The children had the opportunity to taste the delicious Howling Cow ice cream. We would like to thank Mr. Alex for his time and the donated ice cream for the whole school! It was a sweet day at FLS!
