Smart Apples

It was a celebration of what we learned about fall, apples and pumpkins. We added some play money to our dramatic play. The children pretended to sell and buy pumpkins. We practiced to count 1:1 correspondence and learned about simple mathematics operations. The children painted apple trees.  We added vegetables to our sensory table and the children pretend to wash them. The children decorated their bags for trick or treat at school and thanksgiving placemats that will be donated to Raleigh recues Mission. Also, this week was our first fieldtrip. We spent a wonderful time at Hill Ridge Farms. They picked their own pumpkins.  We looked at some farm animals and enjoyed different activities.  The children decided that our next study would be on “Transportation”. Pumpkins! Pumpkins! We discuss how pumpkins grow on a vine and how pumpkins can be green and orange. The children had the opportunity to discuss and pretend to have the responsibilities of a farmer at the pumpkin patch. Also, we created a small café. The children pretended to sell cookies, pies and popcorn. The children had the opportunity to act out different roles. During the week, the children painted their representation of pumpkins and we practiced our fine motor skills by hammering golf tees into the pumpkin. The children learned that a pumpkin float just like apples. The children sorted gourds by smooth and bumpy. The children used candy pumpkins and toothpicks to create different structures. Also, we tasted pumpkin spice marshmallows and we created a graph. We would like to thank the parents that donated pumpkins to our class.  Calabazas! This week was about apples. The children observe apples and created their representation of an apple. The children pretended to pick apples and bake apple pies in the dramatic area. The children made predictions about how many seeds are inside our apples and do apples float or sink?. We found out our apples have 9 seeds and apples float, because they are 25% air. In the sensory table, we use tongs and plastic apples to sort, we stuffed a scarecrow and we sorted pom-poms by color using tongs. The children tasted different apples and choose their favorite. Also, we had a tasting party. The children choose their favorite apple product. We want to thank the parents who donated apple products for our tasting party. It was delicious!      This week, the children explored why leaves are falling down and why leaves are changing colors. The children have enjoyed collecting leaves during outside time. We learned about chlorophyll, that help leaves to stay green during summer and spring, but the trees doesn’t produce it during Fall and that is the reason leaves change colors during Fall. During this week, we conducted a science experiment with the leaves. We observed  when the chlorophyll goes away and the leaves turned orange, red and yellow colors.  Please, check our predictions and conclusion at the science center.         We created a man with different sizes and color leaves after we read the book “The Leaf Man'”, by Lois Ehlert. We spent the month of September learning how to get along with others in a community-oriented classroom and learning the names of our friends. We worked on building relationships with our friends and teachers. The children now feel safe and secure with us and the crying has stopped. They are beginning to understand the concept of our classroom as a community and why we must follow the rules in our classroom.   We spent the month learning how to use the classroom materials and how to play and share with our new friends. The children have been working on strengthen their fine motor skills. They had use different materials to paint and they are practicing using scissors and using different writing tools.
