Smart Apples

This week, it was a celebration of what we learned about fall, apples and pumpkins. We added some play money to our dramatic play. The children pretend to sell and buy pumpkins. We practiced to count 1:1 correspondence and learned about simple mathematics operations. The children painted apple trees and used paint to create leave prints. The children added leaves, pumpkin, apples and pinecones to their structure. We added a scale to our science, we weigh our pumpkins and we found out how much we weighed. Also, this week was our first fieldtrip. We spent a wonderful time at Hill Ridge Farms. The children rode on the train and they picked their own pumpkin.   We looked at some farm animals and enjoyed different activities.   The children decided that our next study would be on “Dinosaurs”. Pumpkins! Pumpkins! We added to our dramatic center a small pumpkin patch. The children had the opportunity to discuss and pretend the responsibility of a farmer at the pumpkin patch. Also, we created a small café. The children pretended to sell cookies, pies and popcorn. The children had the opportunity to act out different roles. During this week, the children painted their representation of pumpkins and we practiced our fine motor skills by cutting pumpkin cut outs and hammering golf tees into the pumpkin. The children learned that a pumpkin float just like apples. The children sorted gourds by smooth and bumpy. Also, the children used balance scale to figure out which pumpkin was heavier. This week was everything about apples. We transformed our dramatic center into an orchard and an apple pie bakery. The children had the opportunity to sort and count 1:1 correspondence apples and pretended to bake delicious pies. We learned how apples are different in color. Green apples are green because they contain chlorophyll. Yellow apples start out green but the apple stop making chlorophyll as it matures and red apples follow the same pattern as yellow apples, but start making a red pigment called anthocyanin. Also, we learned that apples float when dropped into water because they consist of 25% air. The children engaged in fine motor activities. We played with play dough (scents apple pie) and we played with tongs at the sensory table. The children engaged in observational painting. This week, the children explored why leaves are falling down and why leaves are changing colors. The children have enjoyed collecting leaves during outside time. We learned about chlorophyll, that help leaves to stay green during summer and spring, but the trees doesn’t produce it during Fall and that is the reason leaves change colors during Fall. During this week, we conducted a science experiment with the leaves. We observed when the chlorophyll goes away and the leaves turned orange, red and yellow colors. Please, check our predictions and conclusion at the science center. We created a man with different sizes and color leaves after we read the book “The Leaf Man'”, by Lois Ehlert. Ms.Li and Ms.Krista read about the different things you can do with the fallen leaves, and how to know that it is fall. Everyone got a chance to use different colors to paint with leaves instead of paintbrushes. We also pretended to rake leaves and had our friends all work together to rake them.  ...
