Hibernation! Hibernación!

Image
This week, we learned about hibernation. We learned that some animals such as bear, hedgehog, snake, turtles and sails hibernate during the winter season. Hibernation means a deep sleep.  We read the book “The Snowy Nap” by Jan Brett and the children used clay and sticks to make hedgehogs. We learned that some animals hibernate because they need to survive the cold weather and they wake up when it is warm outside. We added teddy bears to our block area and we encouraged the children to build caves for them so they can hibernate. We added ice, salt and colored water to the sensory table. We learned that salt helps to melt the ice and that is one reason the town add a mix of salt and sand to the road when it expects snow. At the science table the children created different structures with marshmallows and toothpicks and we observe how long it will take a snowman to melt. We collected data and we measured the snowman through the day. Esta semana, aprendimos acerca de hiberna...

Winter! Invierno!

This week, we begin our study on winter; we discuss the signs of winter such as cold weather, and bare trees and how humans use warm clothes during this season. We transform our dramatic play into a skating rink. The children pretended to skate, shovel snow and bake cookies. We added snow to our sensory table; the children played with plastic animals and measuring cups. At art center the children created beautiful wintery art. They painted snowflakes, created a winter tree and used scissors to make a snowman.  At the science table, we learned that snowflakes are different, but the beginning shape of a snowflake is a hexagon and crystals are connected to this shapes to create amazing snowflakes. We practiced our literacy and fine motor skills by make letters with play dough.  Esta semana, empezamos nuestro estudio en  el invierno, discutimos acerca las primeras señales del invierno como  el clima frio, los arboles sin hojas y como los humanos usamo...

Buildings! Edificios!

Image
We spent the week by celebrating our learning on buildings. We made a collage with painter samples and we continue building with different blocks.  At the sensory table we added water and blocks, and the children built a tower. They learned about equilibrium and balance. The most important project was working with a partner. The children discuss and work together to create different buildings. They drew pictures of their buildings. It was great to see the children helping and engaging in conversations with their partner about different details for their building. Great team work! Our next study will be on winter!
