Hibernation! Hibernación!

This week, we learned about hibernation. We learned that some animals such as bear, hedgehog, snake, turtles and sails hibernate during the winter season. Hibernation means a deep sleep.  We read the book “The Snowy Nap” by Jan Brett and the children used clay and sticks to make hedgehogs. We learned that some animals hibernate because they need to survive the cold weather and they wake up when it is warm outside. We added teddy bears to our block area and we encouraged the children to build caves for them so they can hibernate. We added ice, salt and colored water to the sensory table. We learned that salt helps to melt the ice and that is one reason the town add a mix of salt and sand to the road when it expects snow. At the science table the children created different structures with marshmallows and toothpicks and we observe how long it will take a snowman to melt. We collected data and we measured the snowman through the day.

Esta semana, aprendimos acerca de hibernación. Aprendimos que algunos animales como los osos, erizo, serpiente, tortugas y caracoles duermen durante el invierno. Hibernación significa a sueno profundo. Leímos el libro “The snowy nap” por Jan Brett y los niños usaron arcilla y ramas de arboles pata hacer unos erizos. Aprendimos que algunos animales duermen porque ellos necesitan sobrevivir el clima frio y que se despierta cuando empieza ha calentarse el clima. Añadimos ositos a nuestra área de bloques y  animamos a los niños a construir cuevas para ellos para que puedan dormir. Añadimos hielo, sal y agua de colores a nuestra mesa sensorial. Aprendimos que la sal ayuda a derretir el hielo y es una de la razones que añaden una mezcla de sal y arena a los caminos cuando se espera nieve. En la mesa de ciencia los niños construyeron diferentes estructuras con malvavisco y palillo de diente y también observamos cuanto tiempo  tarde en derretirse un muñeco de nieve y Colectamos información y medimos el muñeco del nieve a través del día.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
