Winter/ El Invierno

This week we began our study of winter. The children created a KWL chart, and we generated questions that we will research during the next week. We transformed our dramatic play into an ice-skating rink. The children dress in warm clothes, pretend to serve cookies, popcorn, and drinks, and use pretend skates. At literacy centers, the children spell winter words. At the science center, the children learn about snow and use magnifying glasses to find matches in a snow-matching game. At the manipulative table, the children create winter patterns, use title magnets numbers to count 1:1 correspondence, use snap patterns, and pattern blocks to make snow patterns. At the sensory table, the children play with snow and shapes. At the art center, the children create a winter tree and snowy scenery. At the blocks center, the children use the blocks to create structures. Also, the children practice their fine motor skills by using stickers to form a snowflake. As a winter storm arrives in NC, please stay safe and warm!
Esta semana comenzamos nuestro estudio del invierno. Los niños crearon un gráfico KWL y generamos preguntas que investigaremos durante la próxima semana. Transformamos nuestro juego dramático en una pista de patinaje sobre hielo. Los niños se visten con ropa abrigada, fingen servir galletas, palomitas y bebidas, y usan patines falsos. En los centros de alfabetización, los niños deletrean palabras de invierno. En el centro de ciencias, los niños aprenden sobre la nieve y usan lupas para encontrar coincidencias en un juego de correspondencia de la nieve. En la mesa de manipulables, los niños crean patrones de invierno, usan imanes con números para contar la correspondencia 1:1, usan patrones de encaje y bloques de patrones para hacer patrones de nieve. En la mesa sensorial, los niños juegan con la nieve y formas. En el centro de arte, los niños crean un árbol de invierno y un paisaje nevado. En el centro de bloques, los niños usan los bloques para crear estructuras. Además, los niños practican sus habilidades motoras finas usando pegatinas para formar un copo de nieve. A medida que se aproxima una tormenta invernal a Carolina del Norte (NC), ¡por favor manténganse seguros y abrigados!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
