Smart Apples

This week, we continue learning about land transportation. The children pretended to fix a car in the area of dramatic play. At art center, the children used different shapes to create representation of cars and trains and use Q-tips to paint a train. At the sensory table, the children used toothbrushes to wash dirty trucks. The children learned about simple machines. The children learned about ramps and how can we find it around us. The children created a ramp with gutters and blocks at the block centers. They children experimented with different angles. Also, at science center, the children used ramp, cars and measuring tape. The children use it to measure the distance. The children continue practicing their fine motor by writing words and using scissors. It was a fun week! This week, we begin our study on transportation. We transformed our dramatic areas into a mechanic shop. The children pretended to fix a car, change tires, painted car and added fluids to engine and battery. At the art center the children drew pictures of their family car, made a train with the letter of their name and painted with cars. At the science center, we used snap cubes to measure different trains and cars. The children wrote numbers and trace different cars. We celebrated Valentines Day with a great party. Thanks to the parents for donating delicious cupcakes, cookies, fruit and juice. It was a great party and the children enjoyed all the sweet treats. This week we celebrated our learning of winter. The children practice their fine motor skills by cutting mittens and hats. We read the book, The Hat by Jan Brett. We compared the hat and the mitten. Jan Brett is becoming one of our favorite authors. Also, the children painted with frozen paint. The children created beautiful art. At the science table, the children measure their height with mittens and we learned about how snowflakes are symmetry. The children use geometric shapes to create symmetry snowflakes. The children voted and they decided that our next study would be transportation. Thanks to the parents for attending our partnership day. It was fun creating our favorite parfaits. This week, we learned about animals that adapt to the winter or animals that likes cold weather. We learned that some animals change colors and grow thicker fur to adapt to cold temperatures.  Also, we learned that animals like seals, polar bears, walruses all have a thick layer of fat, called blubber, that keeps them warm in the icy water. The children experimented with icy water and butter.  The children submerged their hands in icy water and compared how it feels with only a bag and how it is feels with butter around their hands. We found out the butter protect our skin from icy water. Also, we learned about igloos. People used it for temporary shelters. Igloos are built with pieces of ice.
