Adaptation! Adaptación!

This week, we learned about animals that adapt to the winter or animals that likes cold weather. We learned that some animals change colors and grow thicker fur to adapt to cold temperatures.  Also, we learned that animalslike seals, polar bears, walruses all have a thick layer of fat, called blubber, that keeps them warm in the icy water. The children experimented with icy water and butter.  The children submerged their hands in icy water and compared how it feels with only a bag and how it is feels with butter around their hands. We found out the butter protect our skin from icy water. Also, we learned about igloos. People used it for temporary shelters. Igloos are built with pieces of ice. The children use blocks to build their representation of igloos. The children drew and painted beautiful penguins and made igloos with packing peanuts.  It was a great week! 

Esta semana prendimos acerca animales que se adaptan a el invierno o animales que le gusta el clima frio. Aprendimos que algunos animales cambian de color y crecen un pelaje grueso para adaptarse a las frías temperaturas. También, aprendimos que los animales como focas, oso polares, and morsas tiene un capa de grasa , llamada grasa de ballena, que permite mantenerlos caliente en las aguas heladas. Los niños experimentaron con agua helada y mantequilla. Los niños sumergieron sus manos en  agua helada y compararon como se siente con sola una bolsa plástica y como se siente con mantequilla alrededor de su mano. Encontramos que la mantequilla protege nuestra piel de la agua helada. También aprendimos acerca de los iglú. Las persona los usan como refugio temporales. Iglú son construidos con pedazos de hielo. Los niños hicieron representaciones de iglú en la área de bloques. Los niños dibujaron y pintaron hermosos pingüinos y hicieron iglú con maní para empacar. Fue una semana grandiosas!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. At the table game, the children played with small colored blocks, puzzles, and Mr. Potato Head. At literacy, the children sorted letters by color, matched letters of their first and last names, and worked with letter puzzles and robot letters. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
