Transportation! Transportación!

This week, we begin our study on transportation. We transformed our dramatic areas into a mechanic shop. The children pretended to fix a car, change tires, painted car and added fluids to engine and battery. At the art center the children drew pictures of their family car, made a train with the letter of their name and painted with cars. At the science center, we used snap cubes to measure different trains and cars. The children wrote numbers and trace different cars. We celebrated Valentines Day with a great party. Thanks to the parents for donating delicious cupcakes, cookies, fruit and juice. It was a great party and the children enjoyed all the sweet treats.

Esta semana, empezamos nuestro estudio en transportación. Transformamos nuestra área de dramático en un taller mecánico. Los niños pretendieron arreglar el carro, cambiar las llantas, pintar el carro y añadieron fluidos al motor y la bacteria. En el área de arte lo niños dibujaron sus carro familiar, hicieron trenes con las letras de su nombre y pintaron con carros. En el área de ciencia, los niños usaron snap cubos para medir diferentes trenes y carros. Los niños escribieron números y trazaron diferentes carros. Celebramos el día de San Valentine con una fiesta grandiosa. Gracias a los padres que donaron deliciosos panqués, galletas, fruta y jugos. Fue una fiesta maravillosa y los niños disfrutaron todos los dulces.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
