Smart Apples

This week was short due to Thanksgiving Holiday, but it was busy! The children decided to learn about Christmas and their family traditions. We talked about being thankful or grateful and the children created beautiful placemats. We had some fun at our first thanksgiving snack. The parents played outside with their children and then decorated a delicious turkey cookie. It was a delicious snack! We are so thankful for each family and each child in our school family. This week we continued our study about bakery. This week was about science, we are experimenting with milk, food coloring and detergent. We learned that milk is made up of minerals, proteins and fats. When the dish soap enters the milk, the fat begins to break up. The soap molecules run around and try to attach to the fat molecules in the milk. Normally this process would be invisible to you, but the food coloring helps you to see all of the movement taking place. Also, we are experimenting with baking soda and vinegar. We learned that a baker uses it. Baking soda is a chemical leavening agent used in baking. This means that when this substance is mixed into a dough or batter and baked, a chemical reaction occurs causing the baked goods to rise. The leavening process not only raises the baked good, but also makes it more tender and supports browning. We mixed vinegar and baking soda and observed the chemical reaction.
