Ice Cream! Helados!

This week we celebrated what we learned about ice cream and bakery. We continue experimenting with ice. The children painted with frozen paint. It was fun to see how they mixed the paint and created new colors. We also experiment with gummy bear and with added to different liquid. We notice the gummy bears are dissolving in vinegar and they expanded in a mix of water, salt, baking soda and sugar. The children had the opportunity to use magnifying glasses to explore the changes. On Friday, we had a great visitor from North Carolina State University-Dairy Education Coordinator. Mr. Alex explains to the children the process of milking a cow and showed us the different types of food for a cow and explained about other products made out of milk. The children had the opportunity to taste the delicious Howling Cow ice cream. We would like to thank Mr. Alex for his time and the donated ice cream for the whole school! It was a sweet day at FLS!

Esta semana celebramos lo que aprendimos acerca de los helados y pendería. Continuamos experimentados con hielo. Los niños pintaron con pintura congelada. Fue divertido ver como ellos mezclaron las pinturas y crearon nuevos colores. También experimentamos con gomas de ositos y le añadimos diferentes líquidos. Notamos que el oso de goma se disuelve en vinagre y que con la mezcla de agua y sal, bicarbonato de soda y azúcar se expande. Los niños tuvieron la oportunidad de usar  lupas para explorar los cambios  El viernes, tuvimos y invitado maravilloso de la Universidad de estado de Carolina del norte – Departamento  de educación de lácteos. Ms. Alex explico a los niños el proceso de ordeno a una vaca y nos mostro los diferentes tipo de alimentos  para la vaca y nos explico acerca otros productos hecho con leche. Los niños tuvieron la oportunidad de probar el delicioso Howling Cow helados. Nos gustaría agradarle a Mr. Alex for su tiempo y por donar helados a toda la escuela! Fue un dulce día en FLS!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
