Flowers! Flores!

This week we begin our study on flowers.  We learned about different painters such as Monet and Van Gogh. The children use markers and crayons to create their own representation of flowers. Also, the children use geometric shapes to make flowers. At block center, the children added flowers to their structures and designed beautiful gardens. At the science center, the children explore different seeds. The children used magnifying glasses and microscopes to observe the shapes and colors of different seeds. We planted black beans. We will observe in the next week. The children drew pictures of their findings. The past week, we observed how caterpillar grow and get inside a cocoon. Finally, we observed how 5 butterflies came out. The children had the opportunity to release them. It was a fascinating week! 
Esta semana empezamos nuestro estudio en las flores. Aprendimos acerca diferente pintores como Monet and Van Gogh. Los niños usaron marcadores y creyones para crear su propio representación de flores. También, los niños usaron figuras geométricas para hacer flores. En la área de bloques, los niños añadieron flores a sus estructuras y diseñaron hermosos jardines. En el área de ciencia, los niños exploraron diferentes semillas. Los niños usaron lupas y microscopios para observar las figura y color de las diferentes semillas. Plantamos granos negro. Lo observaremos la próxima semana. Los niños dibujaron sus hallazgos. La semana pasada, observamos como la oruga crecen y como crean un capullo. Finalmente, observamos como 5 mariposas salieron del capullo. Los niños tuvieron la oportunidad de liberarlas en nuestro jardín. Fue una semana fascinante!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
