Leaves! Hojas!

This was a short week due to Hurricane Michael. This week we discussed why the leaves are changing colors. We learned that chlorophyll help leaves to stay green during the spring and summer. During the fall season the days are shorter and the tree stop producing food that travels to braches and leaves and that is the reason leaves change colors during fall. We read the book “Leaf Man” and the children created their own leaf man. The children sorted leaves by color and size. Also, the children used oil pastel to make their representation of fall leaves. At the sensory table the children found different objects.
Esta semana fue corta por el huracán Michael. Esta semana discutimos  porque las hojas están cambiando de color, Aprendimos que la clorofila ayuda a las hojas a estar verde durante la primavera y el verano. Durante el otoño los días son cortos y los arboles dejan de producir su comida que viaja a través de las ramas y las hojas y esa es la razón de que las hojas cambian de color durante el otoño. Leímos el libro “Hombre de hoja” y los niños crearon su propio hombre de hoja. Los niños clasificaron hojas por color y tamaño. También, los niños usaron creyones de aceite para crear su representación de hojas otoñales. En la mesa sensorial los niños encontrar diferente objetos.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
