Welcome to the APPLES

It was a very different beginning of the school year. We created new connections with new students and their families through live sessions, phone calls and emails.  The past weeks was full of change but also a lot of smiles and fun moments.  We are very grateful for each family and their patience as we navigate this new situation together.

On Monday, it will be our first day of face to face instruction. We are very excited to see each student and to learn and play together. But today we want to celebrate the hard work of each child and their family. We want to thank  the families that shared amazing pictures of their child engaging in remote learning. 

Every week we will have a new post. Please check our weekly post, we are excited to share what we are learning and our fun activities.

Fue un comienzo de año escolar muy diferente. Creamos nuevas conexiones con nuevos estudiantes y sus familias a través de sesiones en vivo, llamadas telefónicas y correos electrónicos. Las últimas semanas estuvieron llenas de cambios pero también de muchas sonrisas y momentos divertidos. Estamos muy agradecidos por cada familia y su paciencia mientras navegamos juntos en esta nueva situación.

El lunes será nuestro primer día de instrucción presencial. Estamos muy emocionados de ver a cada estudiante y aprender y jugar juntos. Pero hoy queremos celebrar el arduo trabajo de cada niño y su familia. Queremos agradecer a las familias que compartieron imágenes increíbles de sus hijos participando en el aprendizaje remoto.

Cada semana tendremos un nuevo post. Por favor revise nuestra publicación semanal, estamos emocionados de compartir lo que estamos aprendiendo y nuestras divertidas actividades.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. At the table game, the children played with small colored blocks, puzzles, and Mr. Potato Head. At literacy, the children sorted letters by color, matched letters of their first and last names, and worked with letter puzzles and robot letters. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
