Winter/ El invierno

This week, we learned that some animals hibernate to survive the winter. Hibernation means that they go into a deep sleep. Some animals that hibernate are reptiles and amphibians, like frogs and snakes, insects like ladybugs and bees, some fish, and mammals such as bats and hedgehogs.
We also learned that water can change from a liquid to a solid. Freezing is the process that causes a substance to change from a liquid to a solid.
At dramatic play, the children continued to pretend to skate and dress in winter clothes. In art, the children used different materials to make bears and snakes and decorated their Valentine’s bags.
At the sensory table, the children played with snow and shape molds, and on Friday, we dyed the snow pink. In science, we learned about estimation, which introduces early math skills, critical thinking, and logical reasoning by encouraging educated guesses about quantities, size, or time. The children estimated how many marshmallows were in a jar, then counted, sorted, and charted heart candies.
In literacy, the children are working on recognizing letters, sounds, and alliteration. In the block area, the children used blocks and their teddy bears to make a cave.
It was a busy week full of love! Thanks to the parents who donated special Valentine snacks!

Esta semana aprendimos que algunos animales hibernan para sobrevivir al invierno. La hibernación significa que entran en un sueño profundo. Algunos animales que hibernan son los reptiles y anfibios, como las ranas y las serpientes; los insectos, como las mariquitas y las abejas; algunos peces; y mamíferos como los murciélagos y los erizos.
También aprendimos que el agua puede cambiar de líquido a sólido. La congelación es el proceso que hace que una sustancia cambie de estado líquido a sólido.
En el área de juego dramático, los niños continuaron simulando que patinaban y se vestían con ropa de invierno. En arte, los niños usaron diferentes materiales para crear osos y serpientes, y decoraron sus bolsas de San Valentín.
En la mesa sensorial, los niños jugaron con nieve y moldes de figuras, y el viernes teñimos la nieve de color rosa. En ciencia, aprendimos sobre la estimación, que introduce habilidades tempranas de matemáticas, pensamiento crítico y razonamiento lógico, fomentando suposiciones fundamentadas sobre cantidades, tamaño o tiempo. Los niños estimaron cuántos malvaviscos había en un frasco y luego contaron, clasificaron y registraron dulces en forma de corazón.
En el área de lectura, los niños están trabajando en el reconocimiento de letras, sonidos y aliteraciones. En el área de bloques, los niños usaron bloques y sus ositos de peluche para construir una cueva.
¡Fue una semana muy ocupada y llena de amor! ¡Gracias a los padres que donaron meriendas especiales para San Valentín!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
