Winter! Invierno!

Winter is coming and we began our study on winter. This week, we learned about signs of winter and snowflakes. We know that the snowflake is a type of precipitation and that snowflakes basic shape is a hexagon, but temperature and wind can change their basic shape and that is why there are no two snowflakes the same. There are 33 types of snowflakes!  The children created a representation of a winter tree, played with peppermint play dough and practice their fine motor by cutting snowflakes and writing their name. The children used pattern blocks to create snowflake patterns and used snowflake stickers to make AB pattern. The children built structures using toothpick and marshmallows. Also, the children practiced their visual discrimination by exploring snowflakes with magnifies glasses and find their match.

El invierno ya esta cerca y comenzamos aprender acerca del invierno. Esta semana, aprendimos acerca  como identificar las señales de invierno y la nieve. Aprendimos que las nieve es una tipo de precipitación  y que la nieve tiene una figura de hexagonal, pero la temperatura y el  viento pude cambiar sus figura básica y que are no dos nieves que son iguales. Hay 33  tipos de nieves! Los niños crearon representación de arboles en el invierno, jugaron que plastilina con olor a menta y practicaron sus motricidad fina usando las tijeras y escribiendo su nombre. Los niños usaron figuras geométricas para crear diferente copa de nieve y usaron etiquetas de copos de nieves para hacer patrones AB. Los niños construyeron estructuras con palillo de dientes y malvavisco. También, los niños practicaron discriminación visual, explorando foto de copos de nieves con lupas y encontrando copos de nieves iguales.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
