This week we learned about air transportation. We transform our dramatic center into an airport. The children dress up as pilots and went through security and played with passports. The children talk about the places they will like to visit such as: Africa, Australia and Florida. Also, the children created their own patterns with stickers. At math, the children use unifix cubes to measure a variety of planes. The children practice counting 1:1 correspondence and understanding the process of measuring. At science table, we experimented with parachutes and small blocks. The children launched the parachutes from different heights. We found that from the highest place the parachute goes very slow, but when we added small blocks the parachute was very quick and fast to reach the floor. Also, we made paper airplanes. We measured the distance they flew. Also, we took our paper airplanes outside. The children had so much fun! They observe that wind and height help paper airplanes go farther. It was a great week full of science fun!

 

Esta semana aprendimos sobre el transporte aéreo. Transformamos nuestro centro dramático en un aeropuerto. Los niños se disfrazaron de pilotos y pasaron por seguridad y jugaron con pasaportes. Los niños hablan de los lugares que les gustaría visitar como: África, Australia y Florida. Además, los niños crearon sus propios patrones con pegatinas. En matemáticas, los niños usan cubos unifix para medir una variedad de planos. Los niños practican el conteo de correspondencia 1: 1 y comprenden el proceso de medición. En la mesa de ciencias, experimentamos con paracaídas y bloques pequeños. Los niños lanzaron los paracaídas desde diferentes alturas. Descubrimos que desde el lugar más alto el paracaídas va muy lento, pero cuando agregamos bloques pequeños el paracaídas fue muy rápido para llegar al piso. Además, hicimos aviones de papel. Medimos la distancia que volaron. Además, sacamos nuestros aviones de papel afuera. ¡Los niños se divirtieron mucho! Observan que el viento y la altura ayudan a que los aviones de papel vayan más lejos. ¡Fue una gran semana llena de diversión científica!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
