Flowers/Las Flores

This week, we learned about different artists that paint flowers. We learned about Vincent Van Gogh and his painting sunflowers and Georgia O'Keeffe, an American artist, that is known for her paintings of flowers and desert landscapes. The children painted and drew their favorite flowers. Also, we discuss how flowers help us to express our love and friendship. At manipulative center, the children experimented with Legos and created flowers, insects and amazing structures. At block center, the children use flowers and blocks to build a greenhouse and museum. At writing center, the children practiced writing words in their journal and drew pictures. Next week, we will learn about insects.

 

Esta semana, aprendimos sobre diferentes artistas que pintan flores. Aprendimos sobre Vincent Van Gogh y su pintura de girasoles y sobre Georgia O'Keeffe, una artista estadounidense, conocida por sus pinturas de flores y paisajes desérticos. Los niños pintaron y dibujaron sus flores favoritas. Además, hablamos de cómo las flores nos ayudan a expresar nuestro amor y amistad. En el centro de manipulación, los niños experimentaron con Legos y crearon flores, insectos y estructuras asombrosas. En el centro de bloques, los niños usan flores y bloques para construir un invernadero y un museo. En el centro de escritura, los niños practicaron escribir palabras en su diario y dibujaron. La semana que viene aprenderemos sobre insectos.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
