Winter/Invierno

This week we continue our study on winter. At art center, the children created the representation of winter trees and made snowmen by the number of letters in their name and they added amazing details. Also, they painted with white paint, we pretended to paint with snow. At the sensory table, we added instant snow, it was a simple experiment. We added water to the instant snow. We learned that instant snow is actually derived from the super absorbent polymer found in baby diapers. When water comes in contact with the polymer, it moves from outside the polymer to the inside and causes it to swell. The children played with our magic snow and measuring cups. At science table, the children used marshmallows and toothpicks to make a tower and they learned that snowflakes are different shapes, but the initial shape of the snowflake is a hexagon and crystal attached to this shape to create amazing beautiful snowflakes. At the literacy table, the children spelled a variety of winter words and talked and discuss winter vocabulary.  At blocks, the children created structures to protect us from the cold weather. It was a week of new transitions, but the children are adapting very well. Ms. Brooke is doing a great job implementing the lesson plan and Ms. Carolina and Mr. Israel are supporting each child through different activities. Next week, we will discuss the concept of hibernation and why animal hibernate. 

 

Esta semana continuamos nuestro estudio sobre el invierno. En el centro de arte, los niños crearon la representación de árboles de invierno e hicieron muñecos de nieve por el número de letras de su nombre y agregaron detalles asombrosos. Además, pintaron con pintura blanca, fingimos pintar con nieve. En la mesa sensorial, agregamos nieve instantánea, fue un experimento simple. Agregamos agua a la nieve instantánea. Aprendimos que la nieve instantánea en realidad se deriva del polímero súper absorbente que se encuentra en los pañales para bebés. Cuando el agua entra en contacto con el polímero, se mueve desde el exterior del polímero hacia el interior y hace que se hinche. Los niños jugaron con nuestra nieve mágica y tazas medidoras. En la mesa de ciencias, los niños usaron malvaviscos y palillos de dientes para hacer una torre y aprendieron que los copos de nieve tienen formas diferentes, pero la forma inicial del copo de nieve es un hexágono y un cristal adherido a esta forma para crear hermosos copos de nieve. En la mesa de alfabetización, los niños deletrearon una variedad de palabras de invierno y hablaron y discutieron el vocabulario de invierno. En los bloques, los niños crearon estructuras para protegernos del frío. Fue una semana de nuevas transiciones, pero los niños se están adaptando muy bien. La Sra. Brooke está haciendo un gran trabajo implementando el plan de lecciones y la Sra. Carolina y el Sr. Israel están apoyando a cada niño a través de diferentes actividades. La próxima semana, discutiremos el concepto de hibernación y por qué los animales hibernan.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
