Hibernation/Hibernación

This week we learned about animals that hibernate during the wintertime. During the winter, temperatures drop and food supply decreases. In order to survive, certain animals will hibernate - meaning to enter a period of inactivity through deep sleep/unconsciousness. This allows animals to store food, suppress their metabolism and reserve energy. Some of the animal that hibernate are bears, snakes, snails and turtles. At art center, the children made a bear and snake with paper plates and construction paper. At block center, the children built a cave so that the bears can hibernate, and they drew pictures of their structures. At sensory, the children played with snow and letters. They recognized uppercase and lowercase letters. At dramatic area, the children continued dressing up for the winter, shovel snow and selling popcorn and drinks. At science, we used a variety of materials to measure different parts of the teddy bear and sort bears by size and colors. At manipulates, we used pattern blocks to make snowflakes, play with small blocks and sort by size. At literacy art, the children continued recognizing letters and writing letters.  At language group, the children are learning about retelling a story with details and answer questions. At social group, we petted Stella and learned about feelings. At music group, we played instruments together and learned new songs. It was a short week, but it was full of fun! 

 

Esta semana aprendimos sobre los animales que hibernan durante el invierno. Durante el invierno, las temperaturas descienden y el suministro de alimentos disminuye. Para sobrevivir, ciertos animales hibernan, lo que significa entrar en un período de inactividad a través del sueño profundo/inconsciencia. Esto permite a los animales almacenar alimentos, suprimir su metabolismo y reservar energía. Algunos de los animales que hibernan son osos, serpientes, caracoles y tortugas. En el centro de arte, los niños hicieron un oso y una serpiente con platos de papel y cartulina. En el centro de bloques, los niños construyeron una cueva para que los osos puedan hibernar y dibujaron sus estructuras. En la sensorial, los niños jugaron con nieve y letras. Reconocieron letras mayúsculas y minúsculas. En el área dramática, los niños continuaron vistiéndose para el invierno, paleando nieve y vendiendo palomitas de maíz y bebidas. En ciencias, usamos una variedad de materiales para medir diferentes partes del oso de peluche y clasificar los osos por tamaño y color. En manipulas, usamos bloques de patrón para hacer copos de nieve, jugamos con bloques pequeños y ordenamos por tamaño. En el arte de la alfabetización, los niños continuaron reconociendo letras y escribiendo letras. En el grupo de idiomas, los niños están aprendiendo a volver a contar una historia con detalles y responder preguntas. En el grupo social, acariciamos a Stella y aprendimos sobre los sentimientos. En el grupo de música, tocamos instrumentos juntos y aprendimos nuevas canciones. ¡Fue una semana corta, pero estuvo llena de diversión!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
