Winter-Snow/ Invierno-La nieve

This week we learned about the snow. We learned that snow crystals stick together to make snow and then drop to the earth. We learned that the middle of the snow is the shape of a hexagon. Also, we learned that all snowflakes are different. At dramatic play, the children continued ordering popcorn and drinks and shoveled snowballs. At blocks the children continued building with white blocks and adding animals and people to their amazing structures. At sensory table, we practiced our fine motor skills by using hole punchers and also, we played with snow and measuring cups. At art table, the children used different materials to create amazing snowmen and painted a snowflake by painting different lines. At math table, the children learned about estimation. That estimate was how many marshmallows was in the container. They did an amazing job estimating and writing numbers. At letters, we make snowflakes with letters. The children sorted letters by uppercase and lowercase. At science table, first we experimented with water and ice and then ice, salt and water and observed how the ice melted. We observed our own snowman melt through the day. We learned the water can go through different stages from solids to liquids. Also, we measured our height with mittens and created a classroom book. It was a very busy week!


Esta semana aprendimos sobre la nieve. Aprendimos que los cristales de nieve se pegan para hacer nieve y luego caen a la tierra. Aprendimos que el medio de la nieve tiene la forma de un hexágono. Además, aprendimos que todos los copos de nieve son diferentes. En el juego dramático, los niños continuaron pidiendo palomitas de maíz y bebidas y palas de bolas de nieve. En los bloques, los niños continuaron construyendo con bloques blancos y agregando animales y personas a sus increíbles estructuras. En la mesa sensorial, practicamos nuestra motricidad fina usando perforadoras y también jugamos con nieve y tazas medidoras. En la mesa de arte, los niños usaron diferentes materiales para crear increíbles muñecos de nieve y pintaron un copo de nieve pintando diferentes líneas. En la mesa de matemáticas, los niños aprendieron acerca de la estimación. Esa estimación fue cuántos malvaviscos había en el contenedor. Hicieron un trabajo increíble estimando y escribiendo números. En letras, hacemos copos de nieve con letras. Los niños ordenaron las letras por mayúsculas y minúsculas. En la mesa de ciencias, primero experimentamos con agua y hielo y luego con hielo, sal y agua y observamos cómo se derretía el hielo. Observamos nuestro propio muñeco de nieve derretirse durante el día. Aprendimos que el agua puede pasar por diferentes etapas, desde sólida hasta líquida. Además, medimos nuestra altura con guantes y creamos un libro de clase. ¡Fue una semana muy ocupada!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
