The Gingerbread man/ El hombre de jengibre

This week was “The Gingerbread Man”. We read several versions. We found out some characters were similar and different, and the end was different. Also, we read “The Gingerbread Girl”. We started a week by tasting gingerbread cookies and created a graph by how the children bit their cookie. Also, we found out what happened to cookies when they mix with water. We learned the word dissolve. Like most cookies or crackers, a gingerbread cookie will break apart when it's submerged in certain liquids. This is known as dissolving. Dissolving happens when a solute (such as a cookie) is placed in a solvent (such as water). At art table, the children used oil pastel to decorate the gingerbread man, stamped with cookie cutters, follow directions to draw a gingerbread and use collage material to decorate their own gingerbread man. At literacy, the children took turns playing Zingo, matching letters, upper case to lowercase and writing the letter T. At manipulative table, the children followed ABC patterns and used candy blocks to create structures. At science, the children helped the Gingerbread man to create a boat to cross the river. The children planed and persist in their ideas. At blocks the children will trap to catch the gingerbread man and create bridges to help him to cross the river. We finished the week with Santa’s visit and decorated delicious cookies. It was a great week!

 

Esta semana fue “El hombre de jengibre”. Leemos varias versiones. Descubrimos que algunos personajes eran similares y diferentes, y el final fue diferente. También leemos “La niña de jengibre”. Comenzamos una semana probando galletas de jengibre y creamos un gráfico de cómo los niños mordían sus galletas. Además, descubrimos qué les pasa a las galletas cuando se mezclan con agua. Aprendimos la palabra disolver. Como la mayoría de las galletas saladas, una galleta de jengibre se romperá cuando se sumerja en ciertos líquidos. Esto se conoce como disolución. La disolución ocurre cuando un soluto (como una galleta) se coloca en un solvente (como el agua). En la mesa de arte, los niños usaron pastel al óleo para decorar el hombre de jengibre, estamparon con cortadores de galletas, siguieron instrucciones para dibujar un pan de jengibre y usaron material de collage para decorar su propio hombre de jengibre. En alfabetización, los niños se turnaron para jugar Zingo, relacionar letras, mayúsculas con minúsculas y escribir la letra T. En la mesa manipulativa, los niños siguieron patrones ABC y usaron bloques de dulces para crear estructuras. En ciencias, los niños ayudaron al hombre de jengibre a crear un barco para cruzar el río. Los niños planearon y persistieron en sus ideas. En los bloques, los niños harán trampas para atrapar al hombre de jengibre y crearán puentes para ayudarlo a cruzar el río. Terminamos la semana con la visita de Santa y decoramos deliciosas galletas. ¡Fue una buena semana!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
