Gardening/La jardinería

This week, we continued learning about gardening. We learned that worms live underground where the plants roots are. As the worms dig, they make tunnels and loosen the soil, which helps the plants grow. But the most helpful thing they do is add castings to the soil. Castings, or worm poop, add nutrients to the soil. A nutrient is a substance in food that helps plants, animals, and people grow. The nutrients in the soil help plants stay healthy. At blocks, the children built amazing structures. They are working together to build cities. At dramatic play, the children made cards and flower arrangements for their mothers. At science, the children played with floor puzzles, observed sunflowers and drew pictures of their observation and learned about pollen and how butterflies and bees collected it. Also, we learned how water travel through the plants. At manipulative, the children played with puzzles and persisting on task. At literacy, the children played with letters by spelling words and recognizing sounds. We want to thank the Briscoe family for donating the flowers for our science experiment.

 

We want to thank all the families who gave gifts and cards during teacher appreciation week. We felt loved and each gift made our day! 

 

Esta semana continuamos aprendiendo sobre jardinería. Aprendimos que los gusanos viven bajo tierra donde están las raíces de las plantas. A medida que los gusanos excavan, hacen túneles y aflojan la tierra, lo que ayuda a que las plantas crezcan. Pero lo más útil que hacen es agregar excrementos al suelo. El humus o excremento de lombriz agrega nutrientes al suelo. Un nutriente es una sustancia de los alimentos que ayuda a crecer a las plantas, los animales y las personas. Los nutrientes del suelo ayudan a las plantas a mantenerse saludables. En los bloques, los niños construyeron estructuras asombrosas. Están trabajando juntos para construir ciudades. En el juego dramático, los niños hicieron tarjetas y arreglos florales para sus madres. En ciencias, los niños jugaron con rompecabezas en el piso, observaron girasoles, hicieron dibujos de sus observaciones y aprendieron sobre el polen y cómo lo recolectaban las mariposas y las abejas. Además, aprendimos cómo viaja el agua a través de las plantas. En las actividades manipulativas, los niños jugaron con rompecabezas y persistieron en la tarea. En la alfabetización, los niños jugaron con letras deletreando palabras y reconociendo sonidos. Queremos agradecer a la familia Briscoe por donar las flores para nuestro experimento científico.

 

Queremos agradecer a todas las familias que dieron obsequios y tarjetas durante la semana de agradecimiento a los maestros. ¡Nos sentimos amados y cada regalo nos alegró el día!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
