Dinosaurs! Dinosaurios!

We became scientists this week. . We estimated how many shoes will fit in a real size t-Rex footprint and we estimated how much a t-Rex weighs. We learned about scales and we talked about our weight and class weight. We learned the t-Rex was very heavy. T-Rex weighs 8 tons. We continued playing with measuring tapes.  We experimented with oil and colored water. It was fun to observe how the oil and water does not mix. The children used straws and marshmallows to create representation of dinosaurs. It was fun and delicious! The children worked in small groups. This week two groups worked in mixed play dough and they created our volcano. We will let it dry over the weekend and another two groups will paint and decorate our volcano and dinosaur habitat. Also, we add a new game to our manipulative center. The children are learning to play Chutes and ladders. We are counting, taking turns and staying on task. It was a week full of new learning and fun!

Esta semana nos convertimos  en científicos. Estimamos cuantos zapatos podrían llenar una huella de t-Rex y estimamos cuanto podría pesar un T-Rex. Aprendimos acerca bascule o balanza y discutimos acerca nuestro peso y el peso de nuestra clase. Aprendimos que los t-Res eran muy pesados. T-Rex pesaban 8 toneladas. Continuamos jugando con la cintas métricas. Experimentamos con aceite y agua de colores. Fue divertido observar como el aceite y el agua no se mezclan. Los niños usaron palillos de dientes, pajilla y malvavisco para crear representaciones e dinosaurios. Fue divertido y delicioso! Los niños trabajaron en grupos pequeños. Esta semana dos grupos  trabajaron en mezclar la plastilina y crear un volcán. Lo dejaremos secar durante el fin de semana y otros dos grupos pintaran y decoraran nuestro volcán y habita de dinosaurio. También, agregamos un nuevo juguete a nuestra mesa de manipulativos. Los niños esta aprendiendo a jugar rampas y escalera. Estamos contando, tomando turnos y persistiendo en nuestra tarea. Esta semana estuvo llena de nuevo aprendizaje y diversión!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
