Hibernation & Adaptation

This week was super busy! We adapted our lesson plan due to sickness. Last week, we learned about some animal hibernation and how they adapted to the weather. We learned that bears, snakes and squirrels hibernate. Hibernation is a way of adaptation that help animals to conserve energy and help to survive long periods when food is scarce. The children build caves for bears and created their bear representations. They use scissors to cut snakes. We experimented with ice. We had a snowman in our classroom, and we observed the changes overtime. It took a long time to melt. Also, we experimented with ice and salt at the sensory table. The children learned that salt separate the ice particles and that it is one of the reasons we use it to melt ice on the road or sidewalks.  We learned about igloos and how they help some people to be protected against the snow and cold weather. We added an igloo to our dramatic area, and we pretended to go ice fishing. It was a great opportunity for the children to practice counting objects. We learned that some animals adapted to the weather. Rabbits and foxes grow white thick fur to protect against the weather and camouflage. The children used cotton balls to create their representation of rabbits and used watercolors to paint beautiful penguins. The children use marshmallows to create their representation of igloos. We created beautiful symmetric snowflakes. We learned that something is symmetrical when it is the same on both sides.
