Flowers/Las flores

This week was super short, but we started our new flower study. During large group we discuss what they knew about flowers and what they wanted to find out about flowers and plants. We transformed our dramatic center into a flower shop. The children explored the flowers and some gardening tools. The children pretended to sell flowers and created a flower arrangement. At the block center, the children added flowers to their structures. At art center, the children drew pictures of flowers and created flowers with playdough. At manipulative table, the children played with puzzles and use cubes to measure a flower’s height. Also, remote student painted flowers and sorted pictures by things that help flowers to grow and things that don’t help them.  Next week, we continue our study on flowers/plants. We will explore seeds! Also, the children placed blue pin wheels in front of our school as recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Pinwheels symbolize the bright future that all children deserve.

Esta semana fue muy corta, pero comenzamos nuestro nuevo estudio de flores. Durante nuestra reunión de grupo, discutimos lo que sabían sobre flores y lo que querían saber sobre flores y plantas. Transformamos nuestro centro dramático en una floristería. Los niños exploraron las flores y algunas herramientas de jardinería. Los niños fingieron vender flores y crearon un arreglo floral. En el centro de bloques, los niños agregaron flores a sus estructuras. En el centro de arte, los niños hicieron dibujos de flores y crearon flores con plastilina. En la mesa de manipulación, los niños jugaron con rompecabezas y usaron cubos para medir la altura de una flor. Además, un estudiante remoto pintó flores y clasificó imágenes por cosas que ayudan a que las flores crezcan y cosas que no les ayudan. La semana que viene, continuamos nuestro estudio sobre flores / plantas. ¡Exploraremos semillas! Además, los niños colocaron ruedas azules frente a nuestra escuela como reconocimiento a abril como el Mes de la Prevención del Abuso Infantil. Los molinetes simbolizan el futuro brillante que todos los niños merecen.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
