Flowers/Las flores

This week, we continue our study on flowers. At science center, we created a sequence of how plants grow, we explored the part of a flower and we explored sunflowers and drew pictures of our observations. It was excited to see the children compare flowers and talk about which is their favorite flower. We created a graph and we found that the sunflower is the most favorite flower in our class. Also, we planted our black beans and the children explored the root and that some plants have leaves. Next week, the children will be watering and observing the changes in their plants. At manipulative center, we played with Legos. The children work really hard on creating Spring patterns. They counted 1:1 correspondence, sorted by colors and created a figure. At art center, the children painted flowers and played with playdough. At the writing table, the children wrote words related to plants, flowers and Spring. At block center, the children are creating amazing structures! Our class decided that insects will be our next study. Our classroom wore blue as part of Light it up Blue, a campaign by the organization Autism Speaks that aims to foster understanding and acceptance for those with autism.

 

Esta semana, continuamos nuestro estudio sobre flores. En el centro de ciencias, creamos una secuencia de cómo crecen las plantas, exploramos la parte de una flor y exploramos girasoles y dibujamos imágenes de nuestras observaciones. Fue emocionante de ver a los niños comparar flores y hablar sobre cuál es su flor favorita. Creamos un gráfico y descubrimos que el girasol es la flor favorita de nuestra clase. Además, plantamos nuestros frijoles negros y los niños exploraron la raíz y que algunas plantas tienen hojas. La próxima semana, los niños estarán regando y observando los cambios en sus plantas. En el centro de manipulación, jugamos con Legos. Los niños trabajan muy duro para crear patrones de primavera. Contaron la correspondencia 1: 1, clasificaron por colores y crearon una figura. En el centro de arte, los niños pintaron flores y jugaron con plastilina. En la mesa de escritura, los niños escribieron palabras relacionadas con plantas, flores y primavera. ¡En el área de bloques, los niños están creando estructuras asombrosas! Nuestra clase decidió que los insectos serán nuestro próximo estudio. Nuestro salón de clases se vistió de azul como parte de Light it up Blue, una campaña de la organización Autism Speaks que tiene como objetivo fomentar la comprensión y la aceptación de las personas con autismo.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
