Apples/ Manzanas

This week was all about Apples! We started our study on Apples, Fall and Pumpkins. This week, we discussed what we knew about apples, described the outside of an apple and made predictions about if apples sink or float. We found apples can float because 25% of their volume is air. Apples are less dense than water, so they float! We transformed our dramatic area into an orchard. The children pretended to pick apples, sort them and count them. Also, they pretended to bake apple pies. At the sensory table, the children used spoons, muffin pans and plastic balls. They pretended to catch apples. This is a great activity to help children to improve eye-hand coordination.  At science, we tasted different apples. The class favorite apple is red. Also, we sorted apples and created AB patterns.  At math and manipulatives, the children used scoops and scissors to sort pom-poms and count them 1:1 correspondence and used snap cubes to create an apple. Also, the children are making patterns and counting object 1:1. At literacy, the children played with letters by matching uppercase and lowercase and alphabet puzzles. At art table, the children observed different apples and painted their representation, they stamped with apples and rip paper to make their favorite apples. This week was very busy because we started our special activities. Ms. Sara visited our classroom to talked about emotions and sort pictures of happy and sad. Ms. Robin introduce a simple story with a beginning, a middle and an end and the children had the opportunity to retell the story and Ms. Shelly visited our classroom to introduce music instruments, sanged and movement with the children. It was a super busy but full of fun and learning. 

 

¡Esta semana se trató de manzanas! Comenzamos nuestro estudio sobre Manzanas, otoño y Calabazas. Esta semana discutimos lo que sabíamos sobre las manzanas, describimos el exterior de una manzana e hicimos predicciones sobre si las manzanas se hunden o flotan. Encontramos que las manzanas pueden flotar porque el 25% de su volumen es aire. Las manzanas son menos densas que el agua, ¡así que flotan! Transformamos nuestra área dramática en un huerto. Los niños simularon recoger manzanas, clasificarlas y contarlas. Además, pretendían hornear pasteles de manzana. En la mesa sensorial, los niños usaron cucharas, moldes para muffins y pelotas de plástico. Fingieron atrapar manzanas. Esta es una gran actividad para ayudar a los niños a mejorar la coordinación ojo-mano. En ciencias, probamos diferentes manzanas. La manzana favorita de la clase es roja. Además, clasificamos manzanas y creamos patrones AB. En matemáticas y manipulativos, los niños usaron palas y tijeras para clasificar pompones y contarlos en correspondencia 1:1 y usaron cubos para crear una manzana. Además, los niños están haciendo patrones y contando objetos 1:1. En alfabetización, los niños jugaron con letras haciendo coincidir mayúsculas y minúsculas y rompecabezas alfabéticos. En la mesa de arte, los niños observaron diferentes manzanas y pintaron su representación, estamparon con manzanas y rasgaron papel para hacer sus manzanas favoritas. Esta semana estuvo muy ocupada porque comenzamos nuestras actividades especiales. La Sra. Sara visitó nuestro salón de clases para hablar sobre emociones y clasificar imágenes de felicidad y tristeza. La Sra. Robin presentó una historia simple con un principio, un medio y un final y los niños tuvieron la oportunidad de volver a contar la historia y la Sra. Shelly visitó nuestro salón de clases para presentar instrumentos musicales, canto y movimiento con los niños. Fue un día súper ocupado pero lleno de diversión y aprendizaje.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
