Apples/Manzanas

This week was a short week but very busy. We continued our study on apples. We used the balance to predict how many blocks equal an apple? We described the inside and made predictions of how many seeds were inside of an apple?  At science table, we continued following simple apple patterns and sorting apples by color. At art table, we continued practicing our fine motor skills by using scissors to cut apple cut outs. These fine motor activities help the children to develop eye coordination and strengthen the hands muscle that will improve the pencil grasp and their ability to write. At sensory table, the children experimented with oatmeal, tongs and pom-poms. We encourage children to sort them by color. At literacy, the children continued learning about letters, they are beginning to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters and their sound. At dramatic play, we are encouraging the children to play together and work together in one play scheme such as: bake a pie together, set the table and serve the pie and pretend to eat it. The children learned about another special activity. Movement class with Ms. Mitzy. This class allowed the children to work on their gross skills, listen and follow directions. We had so much fun! And to finalize our study in apples, on Friday the children made apples pie in a cup for snack. It was delicious! 

 

Esta semana fue una semana corta pero muy ocupada. Continuamos nuestro estudio sobre las manzanas. Usamos la balanza para predecir cuántos bloques equivalen a una manzana. Describimos el interior e hicimos predicciones de ¿cuántas semillas había dentro de una manzana? En la mesa de ciencias, continuamos siguiendo patrones simples de manzanas y clasificando las manzanas por color. En la mesa de arte, continuamos practicando nuestras habilidades motoras finas usando tijeras para cortar manzanas. Estas actividades de motricidad fina ayudan a los niños a desarrollar la coordinación visual y fortalecer los músculos de las manos que mejorarán el agarre del lápiz y su capacidad para escribir. En la mesa sensorial, los niños experimentaron con avena, pinzas y pompones. Animamos a los niños a clasificarlos por color. En alfabetización, los niños continuaron aprendiendo sobre las letras, están comenzando a reconocer las letras mayúsculas y minúsculas y su sonido. En el juego dramático, alentamos a los niños a jugar juntos y trabajar juntos en un esquema de juego como: hornear un pastel juntos, poner la mesa y servir el pastel y fingir que se lo comen. Los niños aprendieron sobre otra actividad especial. Clase de movimiento con la Sra. Mitzy. Esta clase permitió a los niños trabajar en sus habilidades básicas, escuchar y seguir instrucciones. ¡Nos divertimos mucho! Y para finalizar nuestro estudio en manzanas, el viernes los niños hicieron pastel de manzanas en vaso para la merienda. ¡Estaba delicioso!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
