Pets/Las mascotas

This week we learned about some pet’s behavior and how they communicate without words. Some pets use their body to communicate. For example, when a dog is growling that can mean stay away or when a dog bark it can be excited or protecting their house or owner. We had a special a visitor, Mr. Ben, he is a dog trainer. He explained that dogs need a healthy diet and plenty exercise. Also, he trained dogs like police dogs. He brought his dog and showed us cool tricks. At manipulative, we practiced patterns with unifix cubes and feathers. At literacy, the children practiced recognizing beginning and last sounds, spelling CVC words and playing with ABC’s floor puzzle. At science, we used scales to compare weight and used non- standard measure to measure bones. At dramatic play, the children pretended to be a vet and take care of the animals.  At blocks, we added boards and the children added it to their structures in many creative ways. At art table, the children painted with watercolors, played with playdough and used geometric shapes to make their favorite pets. At writing table, the children wrote words related to pets and drew pictures. It was a week full of learning!

 

Esta semana aprendimos sobre el comportamiento de algunas mascotas y cómo se comunican sin palabras. Algunas mascotas usan su cuerpo para comunicarse. Por ejemplo, cuando un perro gruñe, eso puede significar que se mantenga alejado o cuando un perro ladra, puede estar emocionado o protegiendo a su casa o a su dueño. Tuvimos un visitante especial, el Sr. Ben, es un adiestrador de perros. Explicó que los perros necesitan una dieta saludable y mucho ejercicio. Además, entrenó perros como perros policía. Trajo a su perro y nos mostró trucos interesantes. En manipulativo practicamos patrones con cubos unifix y plumas. En alfabetización, los niños practicaron reconociendo los sonidos iniciales y finales, deletreando palabras CVC y jugando con el rompecabezas de piso ABC. En ciencias, usamos básculas para comparar el peso y medidas no estándar para medir los huesos. En el juego dramático, los niños se hacían pasar por un veterinario y cuidaban a los animales. En los bloques agregamos tableros y los niños los agregaron a sus estructuras de muchas maneras creativas. En la mesa de arte, los niños pintaron con acuarelas, jugaron con plastilina y usaron formas geométricas para hacer sus mascotas favoritas. En el escritorio, los niños escribieron palabras relacionadas con las mascotas y hicieron dibujos. ¡Fue una semana llena de aprendizaje!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
