Winter/El invierno

This week we learned about what some animals do during the wintertime. We learned that some animals hibernate. They need to hibernate to survive the winter. At art time, the children made brown bears and snakes out of paper plates, painted with watercolors and played with playdough. At sensory table, the children explored ice, salt and colored water. The children observed how salt help to melt ice. At blocks, the children made caves for the bears. The children were very creative using the blocks to make caves/homes for the bears. At dramatic play, the children shovel snow and kept pretending to work and skate. At science table, the children used marshmallows and toothpicks to make a cave for the bears. They built amazing caves! The children used unfiix cubes to measure different body parts of a bear. The children are learning about estimation. The children estimated how many marshmallows were in the container. At manipulative table, the children played with dominoes and sorted them. At writing table, the children used stamp letters to match them. At literacy, the children continued learning the letters, sounds and alliterations. It was a busy week! The children decided that our next study will be on buildings.

 

Esta semana aprendimos qué hacen algunos animales durante el invierno. Aprendimos que algunos animales hibernan. Necesitan hibernar para sobrevivir el invierno. Durante la hora del arte, los niños hicieron osos pardos y serpientes con platos de papel, pintaron con acuarelas y jugaron con plastilina. En la mesa sensorial, los niños exploraron hielo, sal y agua coloreada. Los niños observaron cómo la sal ayuda a derretir el hielo. En los bloques, los niños hicieron cuevas para los osos. Los niños fueron muy creativos usando los bloques para hacer cuevas/hogares para los osos. En el juego dramático, los niños paleaban nieve y seguían fingiendo que trabajaban y patinaban. En la mesa de ciencias, los niños usaron malvaviscos y palillos de dientes para hacer una cueva para los osos. ¡Construyeron cuevas increíbles! Los niños usaron cubos unfiix para medir diferentes partes del cuerpo de un oso. Los niños están aprendiendo sobre la estimación. Los niños calcularon cuántos malvaviscos había en el recipiente. En la mesa manipulativa, los niños jugaron con fichas de dominó y las clasificaron. En el escritorio, los niños usaron letras estampadas para unirlas. En la alfabetización, los niños continuaron aprendiendo las letras, los sonidos y las aliteraciones. ¡Fue una semana ocupada! Los niños decidieron que nuestro próximo estudio será sobre edificios.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
