Our first week of school/ Nuestra primera semana de clases!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.  Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. At the table game, the children played with small colored blocks, puzzles, and Mr. Potato Head. At literacy, the children sorted letters by color, matched letters of their first and last names, and worked with letter puzzles and robot letters. At dramatic play, the children pretended to cook and feed the babies. At blocks, the children played with a variety of blocks. We encouraged the children to work together, take turns, and share materials. At the library center, the children explored different books. We are focusing on building relationships and creating a school community during these first six weeks of school.

 

¡Nuestra primera semana de clases! Algunos niños están en transición de clase, otros se están adaptando a nuevos compañeros y horarios, y otros son nuevos en nuestra familia escolar. Como saben, a veces las cosas nuevas pueden dar miedo, y la transición puede ser difícil. Vemos algunas lágrimas, pero los niños disfrutaron de la primera semana de clases. Nuestra primera semana juntos la pasamos aprendiendo sobre los centros de aprendizaje, los nombres de los nuevos amigos y cómo hacer amigos. En la mesa de arte, los niños dibujaron y jugaron con plastilina. En la mesa sensorial, jugaron con embudos y tazas medidoras. En el juego de mesa, jugaron con pequeños bloques de colores, rompecabezas y con el Sr. Cara de Papa. En la clase de lectoescritura, clasificaron letras por color, relacionaron las letras de su nombre y apellido, y trabajaron con rompecabezas de letras y letras de robot. En el juego de dramatización, los niños simularon cocinar y alimentar a los bebés. En el juego de bloques, jugaron con una variedad de bloques. Animamos a los niños a trabajar juntos, turnarse y compartir materiales. En la biblioteca, exploraron diferentes libros. Nos estamos enfocando en construir relaciones y crear una comunidad escolar durante estas primeras seis semanas de clases.

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
