Apples/Las manzanas

This week, we started our first study on apples. We created a K-W chart (what they know and what they want to investigate). The children described the outside and inside of the apple and made predictions about whether apples float or sink. We found out that apples float. Apples can float because 25% of their volume is air. Apples float because they have tiny pockets of air.  At the art table, the children observed apples and painted their representation, stamped with apples, made an apple with tissue paper, painted with a mix of paint and cinnamon, and played with playdough.  At the sensory table, the children sorted plastic balls by the color of apples. They used spoons and a muffin tray.  At blocks, the children continued learning how to build with a variety of blocks. At dramatic play, the children pretended to pick apples and bake apple pie.  At science, the children sorted apples by color and size, followed patterns, and measured their height with apples. At literacy, the children continued learning and recognizing letters.  At manipulative, the children made patterns with stickers and created apples with Unifix cubes. It was a busy week full of learning.

Esta semana, comenzamos nuestro primer estudio sobre manzanas. Creamos una tabla K-W (lo que saben y lo que quieren investigar). Los niños describieron el exterior y el interior de la manzana e hicieron predicciones sobre si las manzanas flotan o se hunden. Descubrimos que las manzanas flotan. Las manzanas pueden flotar porque el 25% de su volumen es aire. Las manzanas flotan porque tienen pequeñas bolsas de aire. En la mesa de arte, los niños observaron manzanas y pintaron su representación, estamparon con manzanas, hicieron una manzana con papel de seda, pintaron con una mezcla de pintura y canela, y jugaron con plastilina. En la mesa sensorial, los niños clasificaron pelotas de plástico por el color de las manzanas. Usaron cucharas y una bandeja para muffins. En bloques, los niños continuaron aprendiendo a construir con una variedad de bloques. En el juego dramático, los niños fingieron recoger manzanas y hornear pastel de manzana. En ciencias, los niños clasificaron manzanas por color y tamaño, siguieron patrones y midieron su altura con manzanas. En lectoescritura, los niños continuaron aprendiendo y reconociendo letras. En la clase de manipulación, los niños crearon patrones con pegatinas y crearon manzanas con cubos Unifix. Fue una semana intensa y llena de aprendizaje.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
