Leaves/Las hojas

This week, we learned about leaves and how they change through the fall season. We learned that the tree stops producing chlorophyll during the fall, and the other pigments come to the leaves. The tree stops producing it because the days are short and begin to get cold. The children sorted all the items they collected around the yard or neighborhood. At the art center, the children used oil pastels to color their representation of leaves, made leaf collages, created a tree with construction paper and paint, and played with playdough. At blocks, the children built with different blocks and measured their height with blocks. At dramatic play, the children learned that some leaves are used for tea and raked leaves. At the writing table, the children matched uppercase letters by using stickers. At manipulatives, the children used stickers to make patterns. At the sensory table, the children played with leaves and letter and number rocks. The children practiced recognizing letters and writing them. At science, the children explored a pinecone and a leaf by measuring their height, width, and size, and finding out if pinecones and leaves float or sink. At literacy, the children continued learning the form of uppercase letters, recognizing and identifying letters, and playing with letter sounds. Remember to sign up for a parent-teacher conference. It is a great opportunity to share your child’s progress and create new goals for your child. Remember, we are a TEAM! We need to work together and remember we are here to support you and your child!
Esta semana, aprendimos sobre las hojas y cómo cambian durante el otoño. Aprendimos que el árbol deja de producir clorofila durante el otoño, y los demás pigmentos se depositan en las hojas. El árbol deja de producirla porque los días son cortos y empieza a hacer frío. Los niños clasificaron todos los objetos que recogieron en el jardín o el vecindario. En el centro de arte, usaron pasteles al óleo para colorear su representación de las hojas, hicieron collages de hojas, crearon un árbol con cartulina y pintura, y jugaron con plastilina. En el juego de bloques, construyeron con diferentes bloques y midieron su altura con ellos. En el juego de dramatización, aprendieron que algunas hojas se usan para preparar té y rastrillaron las hojas. En la mesa de escritura, unieron letras mayúsculas con pegatinas. En el juego de objetos manipulables, usaron pegatinas para crear patrones. En la mesa sensorial, jugaron con hojas y piedras con letras y números. Practicaron el reconocimiento de letras y su escritura. En ciencias, exploraron una piña y una hoja midiendo su altura, ancho y tamaño, y descubrieron si las piñas y las hojas flotan o se hunden. En lectoescritura, los niños continuaron aprendiendo la forma de las mayúsculas, reconociendo e identificando letras y jugando con los sonidos de las letras. Recuerden inscribirse en una reunión de padres y maestros. Es una excelente oportunidad para compartir el progreso de su hijo y crear nuevas metas. ¡Recuerden, somos un EQUIPO! Necesitamos trabajar juntos y recuerden que estamos aquí para apoyarlos a ustedes y a su hijo.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
