Winter/ El invierno

This week we concluded our study of winter. We learned that some animals migrate, which means they move from one place to another to survive the winter, while other animals adapt to the cold environment.

At the art table, the children used scissors to cut out a rabbit template, drew a mouse, and created their own monarch butterfly.
At the sensory table, the children played with ice cubes and shaving cream. They practiced stacking and counting the ice blocks.
At manipulatives, the children worked with patterns, number tiles to practice 1:1 correspondence, practiced adding, counted Unifix cubes with 1:1 correspondence, and made letters with Legos.
At literacy, the children explored letters and alliterations.
At science, the children measured their height using mittens and used drawings to represent their findings.

On Thursday, we celebrated the 100th day of school. We celebrated 100 days of learning and fun!

We ended this week with our annual field trip to the Poe Center, where the children had the opportunity to learn about dental health. The children decided that our next topic of investigation will be the Human Body.

Esta semana concluimos nuestro estudio sobre el invierno. Aprendimos que algunos animales migran, lo que significa que se mueven de un lugar a otro para sobrevivir el invierno, mientras que otros animales se adaptan al ambiente frío.

En la mesa de arte, los niños usaron tijeras para recortar una plantilla de conejo, dibujaron un ratón y crearon su propia mariposa monarca.
En la mesa sensorial, los niños jugaron con cubos de hielo y crema de afeitar. Practicaron apilar y contar los bloques de hielo.
En manipulativos, los niños trabajaron con patrones, fichas de números para practicar la correspondencia uno a uno, practicaron sumas, contaron cubos Unifix con correspondencia uno a uno y formaron letras con Legos.
En literatura, los niños exploraron letras y aliteraciones.
En ciencia, los niños midieron su altura usando mitones y utilizaron dibujos para representar sus hallazgos.

El jueves celebramos el día número 100 de clases. ¡Celebramos 100 días de aprendizaje y diversión!

Terminamos la semana con nuestra excursión anual al Poe Center, donde los niños tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender sobre la salud dental. Los niños decidieron que nuestro próximo tema de investigación será el Cuerpo Humano.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
