Dental Health! Dentista!

This week we start our study on dental health. We transformed our dramatic area into a dentist office. We learned that a dentist is a doctor who specializes in teeth, gums, and the mouth. The children took turns pretending to be a dentist and patient. The children painted with toothbrushes, made a mouth with construction paper and marshmallows. At the sensory table, we pretended to brush teeth and played with rice and plastic teeth.  We learned that different liquids such as soda and juices could change the color of our teeth. We learned the importance of brushing our teeth and how toothpaste helps our teeth to keep them clean. We learned that we should brush our teeth twice a day. It was a fun week full of new learning!
Esta semana comenzamos nuestro estudio sobre salud dental. Transformamos nuestra área dramática en una oficina de dentista. Aprendimos que un dentista es un médico que se especializa en dientes, encías y boca. Los niños se turnaban haciéndose pasar por dentista y paciente. Los niños pintaron con cepillos de dientes, hicieron una boca con papel de construcción y malvaviscos. En la mesa sensorial, fingimos cepillarnos los dientes y jugábamos con arroz y dientes plásticos. Aprendimos que diferentes líquidos como los refrescos y los jugos podrían cambiar el color de nuestros dientes. Aprendimos la importancia de cepillarnos los dientes y cómo la pasta dental ayuda a nuestros dientes a mantenerlos limpios. Aprendimos que debemos cepillarnos los dientes dos veces al día. ¡Fue una semana divertida llena de nuevos aprendizajes!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
