Transportation/ El transporte

This week started our study on transportation. We learned about cars, trains and bicycles. They help people to move from one place to another. We transformed our dramatic area in an auto shop. The children pretended to be mechanics and fixed our car, painted, fill out mechanics report and even fixed the engine. At blocks, the children used blocks to make roads for our cars. At the sensory table, the children used toothbrushes to clean small cars and also, they played with sand, rocks and trucks. At art center, the children drew pictures of their family cars, used shapes to create their favorite mode of land transportation and created a letter train.  At math table, the children used cars and train cut outs and snap cubes. They measure it and wrote numbers. Also, they worked on puzzles. At literacy, the children matched uppercase and lowercase letters and some of the children recognized the sounds. At science, we learned about ramps. A ramp is a surface with one end higher than the other. An object placed on a ramp will roll, slide, or stay put. The children used a small ramp and cars. They used a plastic foot to measure the distance. Also, they experimented with different objects and the ramp. It was a busy week!

 

Esta semana comenzamos nuestro estudio sobre el transporte. Aprendimos sobre autos, trenes y bicicletas. Ayudan a las personas a trasladarse de un lugar a otro. Transformamos nuestra área dramática en un taller de automóviles. Los niños se hicieron pasar por mecánicos y arreglaron nuestro auto, pintaron, llenaron el informe de mecánica y hasta arreglaron el motor. En los bloques, los niños usaron bloques para hacer caminos para nuestros autos. En la mesa sensorial, los niños usaron cepillos de dientes para limpiar autos pequeños y también jugaron con arena, piedras y camiones. En el centro de arte, los niños hicieron dibujos de sus autos familiares, usaron formas para crear su medio de transporte terrestre favorito y crearon un tren de letras. En la mesa de matemáticas, los niños usaron carros y trenes recortados y cubos para romper. Lo miden y escriben números. Además, trabajaron en rompecabezas. En alfabetización, los niños emparejaron letras mayúsculas y minúsculas y algunos de los niños reconocieron los sonidos. En ciencias, aprendimos sobre las rampas. Una rampa es una superficie con un extremo más alto que el otro. Un objeto colocado en una rampa rodará, se deslizará o se quedará quieto. Los niños usaron una pequeña rampa y carros. Usaron un pie de plástico para medir la distancia. Además, experimentaron con diferentes objetos y la rampa. ¡Fue una semana ocupada!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
