This week, we started our investigation on buildings. We started our week by drawing pictures of their house and describing their picture. We explored our school building. The children counted the doors and window, talked about the roof, letters and numbers on the outside. We read the book “The Three Little Pigs” and we used prompts to retell the story.  At art the children used wood sticks to make a house and use Q-tips to paint different buildings. At the sensory table, the children built a tower with blocks and we discussed about how buildings need a strong foundation. At math, we built a tower with small colored blocks and used rulers to measure the tower. We learned how to use a ruler and then the children drew pictures to shape to draw a representation of their tower. At literacy, the children continued learning letters, sounds and alliterations. At dramatic play, the children explored different materials to build and dressed up as construction workers. At blocks, the children used different blocks to make different structures such as a castle, school, mansion with a pool and garage. Also, this week, the firefighters visited our school, we explored the firetruck and we learned about safety. It was so much fun!

 

Esta semana, comenzamos nuestra investigación sobre los edificios. Comenzamos nuestra semana haciendo dibujos de su casa y describiendo su imagen. Exploramos el edificio de nuestra escuela. Los niños contaron las puertas y ventanas, hablaron sobre el techo, letras y números en el exterior. Leímos el libro “Los tres cerditos” y usamos indicaciones para volver a contar la historia. En arte, los niños usaron palitos de madera para hacer una casa y usaron Q-tips para pintar diferentes edificios. En la mesa sensorial, los niños construyeron una torre con bloques y discutimos sobre cómo los edificios necesitan una base sólida. En matemáticas, construimos una torre con pequeños bloques de colores y usamos reglas para medir la torre. Aprendimos a usar una regla y luego los niños hicieron dibujos para darles forma y dibujar una representación de su torre. En alfabetización, los niños continuaron aprendiendo letras, sonidos y aliteraciones. En el juego dramático, los niños exploraron diferentes materiales para construir y se disfrazaron de trabajadores de la construcción. En los bloques, los niños usaron diferentes bloques para hacer diferentes estructuras, como un castillo, una escuela, una mansión con piscina y un garaje. Además, esta semana, los bomberos visitaron nuestra escuela, exploramos el camión de bomberos y aprendimos sobre seguridad. ¡Fue muy divertido!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
