This week was short but very busy. This week we finished our transportation study by learning about boats. We added a boat to our dramatic area. The children pretended to use the paddle to row and pretend to fish. At the sensory center, the children experimented with a paper boat. They found out they can float for a short time. Also, they played with floated letters. The children recognize letters and sound. At science table, we sorted small transportation counters by land, air, water. The children made predictions about if the water can walk from one cup to another. We learned that water can move through paper. It was fun to observe the change over time. Also, we experimented with rocks and water. We found out a small rock will sink because it is dense and displaces very little water, but a large boat will float because it displaces a lot of water. At art table the children made amazing boats with paper plates. At math, the children continued measuring with snap cubes. At literacy, we continued working on recognizing letters and their sounds, recognize alliteration and rhyming words. I want to thank all the parents for taking the time to sit with and discuss your child’s progress and plan new goals for next quarter.

 

Esta semana fue corta pero muy ocupada. Esta semana terminamos nuestro estudio de transporte aprendiendo sobre los barcos. Agregamos un bote a nuestra área dramática. Los niños simularon usar el remo para remar y simularon pescar. En el centro sensorial, los niños experimentaron con un barco de papel. Descubrieron que pueden flotar por un corto tiempo. Además, jugaron con letras flotantes. Los niños reconocen letras y sonidos. En la mesa de ciencia, clasificamos pequeños mostradores de transporte por tierra, aire, agua. Los niños hicieron predicciones sobre si el agua puede caminar de un vaso a otro. Aprendimos que el agua puede moverse a través del papel. Fue divertido observar el cambio con el tiempo. Además, experimentamos con rocas y agua. Descubrimos que una roca pequeña se hundirá porque es densa y desplaza muy poca agua, pero un bote grande flotará porque desplaza mucha agua. En la mesa de arte, los niños hicieron barcos increíbles con platos de papel. En matemáticas, los niños continuaron midiendo con cubos instantáneos. En alfabetización continuamos trabajando en el reconocimiento de letras y sus sonidos, reconocimiento de aliteraciones y palabras que riman. Quiero agradecer a todos los padres por tomarse el tiempo para sentarse y discutir el progreso de su hijo y planificar nuevas metas para el próximo trimestre.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
