Leaves/ Las hojas

This week was all about leaves. The children learned that the tree has several pigments but the most prominent is the chlorophyll. The tree produces it thanks to the sun. During the fall, the days are short, and the tree stops producing chlorophyll and the other pigments come out and that is the reason the leaves change colors. At dramatic play, the children raked leaves and continued to bake pies. At art center, the children painted with watercolors, make fall trees, made leaf collages and used oil pastel to draw representation of fall leaves. At sensory table the children sorted leaves and counted 1:1 correspondence. At science, the children sorted the items they collected around their house. We talked about the different parts of the tree and how they are changing.  Also, the children sorted leaves by color and size. At manipulative table, the children sorted leaves and created patterns. At literacy, the children continued learning letters and sounds. The children wrote the letter L and vertical and horizontal lines. During language group, the children are learning to answer questions and retell stories. This week, we met Bogie (therapy dog). He did some tricks for the children and the children petted him and brushed him. It was a relaxing activity. The children practiced using inside voices and taking turns.

Esta semana se trató de las hojas. Los niños aprendieron que el árbol tiene varios pigmentos, pero el más destacado es la clorofila. El árbol lo produce gracias al sol. Durante el otoño los días son cortos, el árbol deja de producir clorofila y los demás pigmentos salen y por eso las hojas cambian de color. En el juego dramático, los niños rastrillaban hojas y continuaban horneando pasteles. En el centro de arte, los niños pintaron con acuarelas, hicieron árboles en otoño, hicieron collages de hojas y usaron pastel al óleo para dibujar representaciones de hojas en otoño. En la mesa sensorial los niños clasificaron las hojas y contaron 1:1 correspondencia.  En ciencias, los niños clasificaron los objetos que recogieron en su casa. Hablamos de las diferentes partes del árbol y de cómo están cambiando. Además, los niños clasificaron las hojas por color y tamaño. En la mesa manipulativa, los niños clasificaron hojas y crearon patrones. En la alfabetización, los niños continuaron aprendiendo letras y sonidos. Los niños escribieron la letra L y líneas verticales y horizontales. Durante el grupo de lenguaje, los niños aprenden a responder preguntas y volver a contar historias. Esta semana conocimos a Bogie (perro de terapia). Hizo algunos trucos para los niños y los niños lo acariciaron y lo cepillaron. Fue una actividad relajante. Los niños practicaron usando voces internas y turnándose.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
