Pumpkins/Las calabazas

This week was about pumpkins. We learned that pumpkins are a fruit, have a lot of seeds and they can float. At art center, the children painted their representation of a pumpkin, they painted with watercolors, used scissors to cut a pumpkin cut out and they decorated a pumpkin cut out. At sensory table, the children hammered golf tees into pumpkins. They worked on their eye-hand coordination. At manipulative table, the children used unifix cubes to measure the width of their pumpkin, continued working on patterns and recognizing and matching shapes. At literacy, the children are working on recognizing letters and sounds and spelling their names. At dramatic play, we added pumpkins, the children pretended to bake pumpkin pie and sort pumpkins. At blocks center, the children added pumpkins to their structures. At science, the children measured the height of the pumpkin with unifix cubes and explored the inside of a pumpkin. We had a special visitor “Farmer Minor, Daisy and Buttercup.” The children petted them, and Famer Minor read a pig story. It was a fun week!

Esta semana fue sobre calabazas. Aprendimos que las calabazas son una fruta, tienen muchas semillas y pueden flotar. En el centro de arte, los niños pintaron su representación de una calabaza, pintaron con acuarelas, usaron tijeras para cortar una calabaza recortada y decoraron una calabaza recortada. En la mesa sensorial, los niños martillaron tees de golf para convertirlos en calabazas. Trabajaron en su coordinación ojo-mano. En la mesa manipulativa, los niños usaron cubos unifix para medir el ancho de su calabaza, continuaron trabajando en patrones y reconociendo y combinando formas. En alfabetización, los niños están trabajando en reconocer letras y sonidos y deletrear sus nombres. En el juego dramático, agregamos calabazas, los niños hicieron como si hornearan pastel de calabaza y clasificaran las calabazas. En el centro de bloques, los niños agregaron calabazas a sus estructuras. En ciencias, los niños midieron la altura de la calabaza con cubos unifix y exploraron el interior de una calabaza. Tuvimos una visita especial: "Farmer Minor, Daisy y Buttercup". Los niños los acariciaron y el Famer Minor leyó un cuento sobre cerdos. ¡Fue una semana divertida!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
