Hibernation/Hibernación

This week was short, and we were delayed one day to school! We learned that some animals hibernate. They spend winter in a deep sleep. At blocks, we added teddy bears and the children built a cave for our bears. At art table, the children made bears and snakes out of paper plates and construction paper. At sensory table, the children continued playing with the snow, measuring cups and cups. They tried to build a snow castle. At manipulate table, the children practiced patterns, created patterns and estimated how many marshmallows were in a jar? At dramatic play, the children continue pretending to ice skating and serving cookies, popcorn and drinks. Also, we prepared a non-dairy hot chocolate. It was delicious!

 

¡Esta semana fue corta y nos retrasamos un día en la escuela! Aprendimos que algunos animales hibernan. Pasan el invierno durmiendo profundamente. En los bloques agregamos ositos de peluche y los niños construyeron una cueva para nuestros osos. En la mesa de arte, los niños hicieron osos y serpientes con platos de papel y cartulina. En la mesa sensorial, los niños continuaron jugando con la nieve, midiendo tazas y vasitos. Intentaron construir un castillo de nieve. En la mesa de manipulación, los niños practicaron patrones, crearon patrones y estimaron cuántos malvaviscos había en un frasco. En el juego dramático, los niños continúan simulando patinar sobre hielo y sirviendo galletas, palomitas de maíz y bebidas. Además, preparamos un chocolate caliente sin lácteos. ¡Estaba delicioso!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
