Winter/ El Invierno

Our first full week of this year we continued learning about winter. We learned that snow is a form of ice. Snow forms when water in the atmosphere becomes frozen. Snow comes in all different shapes and sizes. At science, the children experimented with ice and colored water and salt. The children noticed that salt help to ice melt faster. The salt makes it harder for the water molecules to bond together in their rigid structure. In water, salt is a solute, and it will break into its elements. Also, we made a snowman experiment and the children predicted how long it will take to melt and the children built with marshmallows. At manipulative, the children made patterns, took turns at playing Pengolo and counting 1:1 correspondence. At art, the children made snowmen and painted with white and blue paint. At literacy, the children are working on spelling words, alliteration and matching letters. At the writing table, the children are working on writing letters and words. At Sensory table, the children played with snow and measuring cups. At blocks, the children practiced their positional words. They built amazing structures and added frosting to the snowman.  It was a busy week!

 

En nuestra primera semana completa de este año continuamos aprendiendo sobre el invierno. Aprendimos que la nieve es una forma de hielo. La nieve se forma cuando el agua de la atmósfera se congela. La nieve viene en diferentes formas y tamaños. En ciencias, los niños experimentaron con hielo, agua coloreada y sal. Los niños notaron que la sal ayuda a que el hielo se derrita más rápido. La sal dificulta que las moléculas de agua se unan en su estructura rígida. En el agua, la sal es un soluto y se descompondrá en sus elementos. Además, hicimos un experimento con un muñeco de nieve y los niños predijeron cuánto tardaría en derretirse y los niños construyeron con malvaviscos. En los manipulativos, los niños hicieron patrones, se turnaron para jugar al Pengolo y contar la correspondencia 1:1. En el arte, los niños hicieron muñecos de nieve y los pintaron con pintura blanca y azul. En alfabetización, los niños están trabajando en la ortografía de palabras, la aliteración y la combinación de letras. En el escritorio, los niños trabajan escribiendo letras y palabras. En la mesa Sensory, los niños jugaron con nieve y vasos medidores. En los bloques, los niños practicaron sus palabras posicionales. Construyeron estructuras asombrosas y agregaron glaseado al muñeco de nieve. ¡Fue una semana ocupada!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
