This week we started our study on buildings. We began by creating a KWL chart. We discussed what our class knows about buildings and what they want to learn about buildings. We explored our school building. We noticed the windows, roof, door, different AC units, and letters and numbers on the front.We transformed our dramatic play area into a construction site with tools and different building materials. The children explored the materials and created various towers and buildings. At the art table, the children drew pictures of their houses, made houses out of wooden popsicle sticks, and painted buildings from around the world. At the blocks area, the children used a variety of blocks and created amazing structures. At the writing table, the children practiced writing letters. At the manipulative table, the children used pattern blocks to make different patterns related to buildings, counted nuts and nails with one-to-one correspondence, and made different structures with Legos. We designated a safe place in the room where children can display their small building creations. It was a great week full of new learning! We want to thank all the parents for signing up for the conferences. It was great to show all the progress and create new goals.

Esta semana comenzamos nuestro estudio sobre edificios. Empezamos creando un cuadro KWL (Qué sé, Qué aprendí). Hablamos sobre lo que nuestra clase sabe acerca de los edificios y lo que quieren aprender. Exploramos el edificio de nuestra escuela. Observamos las ventanas, el techo, la puerta, las diferentes unidades de aire acondicionado y las letras y números en el frente. Transformamos nuestro rincón de juego dramático en una obra en construcción con herramientas y diferentes materiales. Los niños exploraron los materiales y crearon varias torres y edificios. En la mesa de arte, dibujaron sus casas, hicieron casas con palitos de helado de madera y pintaron edificios de todo el mundo. En el rincón de bloques, usaron una variedad de bloques y crearon estructuras increíbles. En la mesa de escritura, practicaron la escritura de letras. En la mesa de manipulación, usaron bloques de patrones para crear diferentes figuras relacionadas con edificios, contaron tuercas y clavos con correspondencia uno a uno y construyeron diferentes estructuras con Lego. Designamos un lugar seguro en el aula donde los niños pueden exhibir sus pequeñas construcciones. ¡Fue una semana fantástica llena de nuevos aprendizajes! Queremos agradecer a todos los padres por inscribirse en las reuniones. Fue genial mostrar todo el progreso y establecer nuevas metas.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
