Flowers/ Las Flores

This week we continue learning about flowers. At manipulatives, the children created patterns with stickers and use rubber rocks to create different pattern shapes. At art table, the children made their representation of dandelions. It was great to see how they used the material! At dramatic play, we continued playing with flowers, but this week we added some books. It was great to see the children explore non-fictional books.  At science, we planted our germinate black beans. We talked about the importance of watering and sun light. At writing table, we continue practicing our fine motor skills and engaged in pre- writing activities.  At blocks, the children continue to create amazing gardens with blocks and plastic flowers.  We finally finish our week with a science experiment. We used white flowers and colored water (food coloring) to help show how the water travel to the plants. Most plants "drink" water from the ground through their roots.  The water travels up the stem of the plant into the leaves and flowers.  The plant uses the water to make food. When a flower is cut, it no longer has its roots.  But the stem of the flower still "drinks" up the water and provides it to the leaves and flowers. We want to thank the Parker’s Family for donating the flowers! The children decided to study insects.  This week we learned that some insects love flowers. 

 

Esta semana seguimos aprendiendo sobre las flores. En los manipulativos, los niños crearon patrones con pegatinas y usaron piedras de goma para crear diferentes formas de patrones. En la mesa de arte, los niños hicieron su representación de dientes de león. ¡Fue genial ver cómo usaron el material! En el juego dramático, continuamos jugando con flores, pero esta semana agregamos algunos libros. Fue genial ver a los niños explorar libros de no ficción. En ciencia, plantamos nuestros frijoles negros germinados. Hablamos de la importancia del riego y la luz del sol. En la mesa de escritura, seguimos practicando nuestras habilidades motoras finas y participando en actividades previas a la escritura. En los bloques, los niños continúan creando increíbles jardines con bloques y flores de plástico. Finalmente terminamos nuestra semana con un experimento científico. Usamos flores blancas y agua coloreada (colorante de comida) para ayudar a mostrar cómo viaja el agua a las plantas. La mayoría de las plantas "beben" agua del suelo a través de sus raíces. El agua sube por el tallo de la planta hacia las hojas y las flores. La planta usa el agua para hacer comida. Cuando se corta una flor, ya no tiene raíces. Pero el tallo de la flor todavía "bebe" el agua y se la proporciona a las hojas y flores. ¡Queremos agradecer a la familia Parker por donar las flores! Los niños decidieron estudiar insectos. Esta semana aprendimos que algunos insectos aman las flores.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
