This week we started our study on insects. We created a KWL chart, we discussed what the children knew and what they wanted to learn. We learned how to recognize an insect. Insects have 6 legs and three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen) and some insects have wings and antennas. We transformed our dramatic center into a bug lab. The children explored plastic insects with magnifying glasses and microscopes and sorted pictures of insects by size. At art table, we use pattern blocks to create insects and talk about symmetric butterflies, practice creating patterns, sort objects by size and practice to count 1:1 correspondence. At science table, we counted and sorted insects by colors and types. At blocks, the children work together to create different structures. At art table, we use different shapes to make our favorite insects and practice our fine motor by cutting circles to create a caterpillar and we used playdough to make insects.  It was a busy week! We will continue learning about insect next week!

 

Esta semana comenzamos nuestro estudio sobre los insectos. Creamos un cuadro KWL, discutimos lo que los niños sabían y lo que querían aprender. Aprendimos a reconocer un insecto. Los insectos tienen 6 patas y tres partes del cuerpo (cabeza, tórax y abdomen) y algunos insectos tienen alas y antenas. Transformamos nuestro centro dramático en un laboratorio de insectos. Los niños exploraron insectos de plástico con lupas y microscopios y ordenaron imágenes de insectos por tamaño. En la mesa de arte, usamos bloques de patrones para crear insectos y hablamos sobre mariposas simétricas, practicamos la creación de patrones, clasificamos objetos por tamaño y practicamos para contar la correspondencia 1:1. En la mesa de ciencias, contamos y clasificamos los insectos por colores y tipos. En los bloques, los niños trabajan juntos para crear diferentes estructuras. En la mesa de arte, usamos diferentes formas para hacer nuestros insectos favoritos y practicamos nuestra motricidad fina cortando círculos para crear una oruga y usamos plastilina para hacer insectos. ¡Fue una semana ocupada! ¡Seguiremos aprendiendo sobre insectos la próxima semana!

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
