This week we learned about bees and butterflies. We learned that bees work all day collecting pollen and nectar to produce honey. We tasted honey. We found that 10 children like honey and 3 didn’t like honey. We talked about how they use honey at home. Some children put them on pancakes or in tea. We also learned about symmetry and how butterfly wings are symmetry. They are the same size and patterns. The children used paint and construction paper to create symmetry butterflies. Also, we learned that most insects come from an egg, larva, pupa and adult. We are observing our caterpillar at science table. They are getting big and fat. We are waiting for them to get in their cocoon and then turn to butterflies. We sorted insects and measured them at dramatic play. At manipulatives, we used pattern blocks to talk about symmetry and created different insect’s pattern. We finished our week with our last field trip. We went to The Poe Center. The children learned about the importance of taking care of their teeth, learned about gardening and honey and played at the Poe’s playground. 

 

Esta semana aprendimos sobre abejas y mariposas. Aprendimos que las abejas trabajan todo el día recolectando polen y néctar para producir miel. Probamos la miel. Encontramos que a 10 niños les gusta la miel y a 3 no les gusta la miel. Hablamos de cómo usan la miel en casa. Algunos niños los ponen en panquecas o en el té. También aprendimos sobre la simetría y cómo las alas de mariposa son simétricas. Son del mismo tamaño y modelo. Los niños usaron pintura y papel de construcción para crear mariposas simétricas. Además, aprendimos que la mayoría de los insectos provienen de un huevo, larva, pupa y adulto. Estamos observando nuestra oruga en la mesa de ciencias. Se están haciendo grandes y gordos. Estamos esperando que se metan en su capullo y luego se conviertan en mariposas. Clasificamos los insectos y los medimos en el juego dramático. En manipulativos, usamos bloques de patrones para hablar sobre la simetría y creamos diferentes patrones de insectos. Terminamos nuestra semana con nuestra última excursión. Fuimos al Centro Poe. Los niños aprendieron sobre la importancia de cuidar sus dientes, aprendieron sobre jardinería y miel y jugaron en el parque infantil de Poe.

Our first week of school! For some children they are transitioning from another class, some of the children are adapting to new peers and new schedules and some children are new to our school family. As you know sometimes new things can be scary, and transitioning can be hard. We see a few tears, but the children enjoyed the first week of school.    Our first week together was spent learning about the learning centers, names of new friends, and how to make friends. At the art table, the children drew pictures and played with playdough. At the sensory table, the children played with funnels and measuring cups. Our rules/Nuestra reglas

This week, we created the rules of the classroom. We talked about the importance of rules. Rules will help keep us safe. We talked about big and little rules. The rules will help create a supportive and organized school family.  In science, the children learned about primary colors and created new colors by mixing paint and colored water. It was really fun. At the sensory table, we introduced scissors. The children practiced cutting straight lines.  At the art table, the children painted with watercolor, used Q-tips to paint, paint sticks, markers and water to mix colors, and played with playdough. At the dramatic center, the children practiced playing together, sharing materials, and taking turns.  At the table game, the children practiced counting 1:1 correspondence, played with puzzles, and sorted shapes. What to do when we feel sad or scared at school? ¿Qué hacer cuando nos sentimos tristes o asustados en el colegio?

This week we learned about how to recognize what makes us sad or scared at school and what we can do to regulate our emotions. We introduce a safe place. It is a place that the children can use to calm their body and regulate their emotions. The children came up with clever ways to regulate their emotions such as to count to 10 or ask a friend/teacher to read with them or request a hug. We introduced some materials at art center such as playdough, rollers and glue. The children learned they need just a dot of glue. Also, the children drew beautiful self-portraits (take a look at our board). The children continued making new friends and exploring the learning centers.     They are learning their friend’s new names and how to play together. Also, this week we introduced the Question of the Day. It is an opportunity to count and talk about more or less and discuss the answer.
